The Honours program is a four-year program designed to provide students with an opportunity to excel in their studies. The program comprises two components: Honours courses in the junior years and Advanced Placement courses in the senior years. Entrance to the program is by placement exam at the grade 9 level and subsequently by teacher recommendation and student desire in the following years.
The Advanced Placement (AP) Program is an opportunity for high school students to complete university-level work while still in high school. Last year, more than 600,000 AP exams were written by students all over the world. There are many benefits for students who take AP courses. They can study subjects of interest and challenge themselves with students who are similarly motivated. AP often helps steer students who are unsure about future plans toward college or advanced studies, and most colleges view any AP experience as a plus. This gives students a head start and increases their future options. AP prepares students for the future by giving them tools that will serve them well throughout their educational career.

Counseling:
Counsellors are available to help you in a variety of ways including; academic planning and support, personal problem solving, relationships with friends and family, career/post-secondary planning and referral to community resources. Each student is assigned to a counsellor based on the first letter of their last name.
Career Center:
Planning for your future is usually a difficult task, but a most important one. The Career Centre is a good place to find information, ideas and resource materials. Our Career Programs Facilitator can help you on your journey toward graduation and beyond. Come and say "Hi" in the Counselling/Career area before school, at lunch time or after school any day. We know that your in-class time is important to you, so we will do our best to meet with you during non-class time hours.

The Rick Hansen Library is a library for the 21st century! Equipped with a Computer Resource Room, the library is capable of contacting databases on a world-wide basis for the most current information. In the rapidly changing world in which we live the accessibility to such information is crucial to student success! An excellent range of fiction and non-fiction books provide resources for school and home use as well.
Students
are welcome to do research for assignments, quiet
individual or group study, or simply browse the
collection to find materials for recreational
enjoyment. Students should always carry both their
Student I.D. Cards and their public library cards
with them. The Student Cards allow them to sign out
books and the public library cards allows them to
access additional databases
on-line.
In
the RHSS Library, the Dewey
Decimal Classification (DDC) is used for
the non-fiction and reference collections. Fiction
is arranged alphabetically from A to Z by first
three letters of authors last name. Dewey Decimal
System divides knowledge into ten different broad
subject areas, called classes, numbered 000 - 999.
Materials that are too general to belong to a
specific group (encyclopaedias, newspapers,
magazines, etc.) are placed in the 000's. These 10
main classes are further subdivided into subclasses
to incorporate smaller subjects.
