What
is SSA?
Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA) is a program that allows high school students to begin trades training through on-site training while still in high school. By working in a trade the student is able to gain training hours and make money, all while being enrolled in school and earning credits for the work. SSA is most likely for students who are interested in pursuing a career in a trade and do not want to pursue a post-secondary education. Click here for a list of available trades.
There are two ways of enrolling in SSA:
1. Education Stream - with this option your high school education will continue as normal and you will complete your 480 required hours during summer break, after school, on weekends, and during other breaks.
2. Working Stream - with this option your will complete your required graduation courses during one semester of grade 12 and work full-time for the other semester. You may choose the order of these semesters.
Am I a "Hidden Apprentice?"
Are you working part-time in a job that is considered a trade? If so, you are most likely a hidden apprentice. By registering as a Secondary School Apprentice you can earn dual credit for the work you're already doing, become eligible for a $1,000 scholarship, and get a head start on your trade certification. Talk to Mr. Fedrau in the counseling center about what types of work qualify and about registering as a Secondary School Apprentice.
How do I sign up?
See Mr. Fedrau in the Counselling Center. There are some forms to fill out and send in and before long you will be sent your new Apprentice Registration Number.
